Small update

I’m sorry I haven’t been updating too frequently here. Life kind of got the best of me for a while.

To summarize very briefly, quarantine has been quite turbulent. I have recently gone through a divorce, and am currently figuring out the next parts of my life. What this means for the blog is that I’m probably not going to be doing a lot of personal writing; there’s just too much there that I’m not comfortable sharing widely.

Despite this, I myself am doing well. I have had time to process and am confident in where I’m at in my life. I’m hoping I’ll have some more positive personal news to share in the coming year. In the meantime, it’s worth my saying that I’m feeling…generally pretty good.

I’ve been doing a lot of rearranging furniture and decluttering at home the last month or so. I don’t know if it’s a way for me to reclaim the space for myself or whether it’s just something that needed to be done, but it’s made the house feel much more comfortable. That, and the additional space from decluttering makes such a difference - the amount of counter space in the kitchen I’ve freed up alone is astonishing. As I’ve started cooking again recently, it’s been so nice to be able to use all of that space. Of course, there’s still work to do, but it’s been great to be able to dedicate so much time to actually doing it. I set myself a goal, a couple of weeks ago, to do at least something every day - to leave the house neater every day than when I woke up - and it really helps keep me on track and motivate me. I’d recommend it as a strategy to anyone. Even if it’s just something small, even if it’s just enough to maintain today instead of making progress, not letting things slip has felt good.

Me, with my hair dyed purple, looking into the camera and smiling. I’m surprised I haven’t mentioned this over the last year, but I’ve also chosen a new and more permanent hair color for me; with the aid of my amazing local salon, I’ve gone purple! I’ve had it to some extent for about six months or so now, and I love it so much that I think I’ll be keeping it for the foreseeable future.

Next up, for me, I think, is getting back to running. This is another thing I didn’t talk about last year, but last summer I had been working towards being able to run a marathon. I was up to comfortably running 10k distances and was in probably the best shape of my life. Unfortunately personal turbulence ended up with me dropping it, but I’m looking forward to getting back to it this year now that I’m in a more positive place for myself, and I’m hoping by the next year I’ll be able to run in the Buffalo Marathon. I’ll certainly update here as that progresses, as I’m very excited to be able to start again. The weather here has been warm enough for the last few days that I think it’s time to do so.

I would like to spend some time writing some more tech content, but it seems every day I end up a little further away from hands-on technical work of the kind I like to write about. I’m hoping to get back to it, but I want to find a good project first. Maybe a writeup of some Discord chat bots I’ve been working on. Still thinking about that.
